I tend to keep a note of short, pithy statements when I see them and one of these is, ‘On the fast-paced highway of life, I will strive to be a speed bump.’ I am sure that we can all relate to the fast- paced highway
of life. Communication, in particular, is now so instant that is has the effect
of speeding up the whole of life. When I see people walking round the streets
with mobile phones glued to their ears, I sometimes think how sad it is that for
whatever reason, they feel that they cannot just walk around quietly looking at
the world around them and wondering at God’s handiwork, taking time out just
to be still and quiet. But no, they spend most of their life rushing from one
thing to another, making phone calls while they are on the move from A to B. I am certain that we all need to take time out sometimes.
We need to be still and quiet, to give ourselves thinking time, time to take in
the world and all its beauty. To listen to what God may be trying to say to us.
Don’t be afraid of silence. It is what we all need from time to time, not so
much that we are lonely, but time when we can be alone with God. Jesus took time out of his busy life to be alone with God, to talk with him and listen to him, to find out what God wanted him to do. And if Jesus needed to do this as the Son of God, how much more do we need to slow down and to take time out with him. This is why I feel that this injunction to us is so helpful – On the fast-paced highway of life, I will strive to be a speed bump’. More archives click left |
