I have some extracts from a book of short quotations,
one of which says. ‘I can punish myself for mistakes of the past -
or
I can let someone else do it’ Both of these options sound painful. don’t
they? We have all made mistakes in the past -
we
go on making them but if we were to spend our lives punishing ourselves each
time we made a mistake, life would become almost unbearable. We would probably
finish up totally depressed and of no use to anyone. If, on the other hand we
took the other option offered here and let someone else do it, we would have
little idea what sort of punishment might come our way and life could be just as
painful and crippling. Fortunately, for Christians, there is another option
available to us. We can offer up to God all those mistakes we have made
in the past and in humility ask for his forgiveness. This sounds much better
doesn’t it? If we are truly sorry for what we have done, he is ready and
willing to forgive us and thereby enable us to make a fresh start in life. In
the bible it says. ‘If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and
there is no truth in us. But if we confess our
sins to God he will forgive us our sins.’
