I often wonder whether it would be helpful for us, on days when we feel a
bit off or are going through a difficult patch, to wear one of those labels
which we see on some parcels. They say in large red letters, Fragile! At least
they alert us so that when we handle the parcel or open it, we know to treat it
carefully so that it doesn’t break. At least we might then treat each other
with a bit more care and concern. The Bible tells us of lots of occasions when fragile people came to Jesus
for help and none was turned away. Some were physically sick, others were
disturbed in their minds, yet others were concerned for someone else. Jesus
accepted them all, responded to their particular needs and they went away
feeling much less fragile. You may wonder what all this that happened 2000 years ago has got to do
with us today. Towards the end of his earthly life, Jesus promised his
disciples, including us, that his spirit would come upon us and remain with us
for ever. This means that however fragile we feel, we can still come to him for
help and healing. And it also means that we can be used by him to share his love
with other fragile human beings. At times when you feel particularly fragile,
don’t forget that God is ready and willing to help you, all you have to do is
to ask him. He did not turn away those who came to him in the flesh, and he will
not turn us away now. |
