The
other day I decided to paint my garage door, which had got splattered with
mortar when I had an extension built on to my home. I washed it all and tried to
get it clean but was left with these concrete like lumps in various places. Some
were a reasonable size, others were quite small but if I had left them there
they would have completely spoiled the new painting so I took a long lime
scraping them all off before I could begin the easy part of putting on the
paint. With this good foundation it went on a treat. It
struck me that there was a lesson for us in this - we can only make a success of
our lives if we build on a good foundation - one which has had all the rubbish
cleared away. The
only true foundation for us to build on is a love of and trust in God our Father
who made us and who loves us so much that he sent his son to die for us. In St
Luke’s gospel Jesus spoke about two houses one built on rock which survived
the wind and rain and the other built on sand which was beaten by the weather
and collapsed. He said that if we hear his words and do nothing we are like the
house on the sand- the one built on such a poor foundation that it would never
be any good. We
need to make sure that we have cleaned off our lumps and bumps from the past so
that we can go forward knowing that our lives have a firm foundation in our
Lord. |
